Updated autocorrect is AWFUL

Solved

I updates today on iOS, end it unnecessarily changed so many of my woads that I spalled correctly. I'm leading the mistakes on this paragraph, ann I'll type the correct version next. Keep in mind that I spalled ell of these woads correctly, ann all spalling errors are a result of the autocorrect.

"I updated today on iOS, and it unnecessarily changes so many of my words that I spelled correctly. I'm leaving the mistakes in this paragraph, and I'll type the correct version next. Keep in mind that I spelled all of these words correctly, and all spelling errors are a result of the autocorrect." (this is what I was trying to type).

I really want to love this keyboard, but it is becoming impossible to use. Having to correct several words every sentence is unacceptable, especially when my typing is so accurate.

Can't you license a 3rd party autocorrect feature? I realize that would negate the privacy aspect of the keyboard, but at this point I would be ok with that. Maybe it could be an opt-in feature? Please do something about this, the Word Flow keyboard is becoming very attractive.

Hi Larry

Thanks for your feedback we'll have a look. In the meantime you can disable it in the settings.

One question though: Do you have selected English as language in the language settings?

It uses Apple's autocorrection andan additional algorithm do filter out unlogical corrections. So it should work quite good.

In the settings under Active Languages, it had "System Language" selected. I added English, and that seems to have stopped the majority of unnecessary corrections. It still doesn't really do the type of correction that Apple's keyboard provides, though. For instance, Apple's keyboard would correct Im to I'm, and doe.nt to doesn't.

Hi Larry

Thanks for letting us know. We'll have a look and will fix it in the next update.

About the corrections you're right. As we do additional checks it corrects less than Apple but there are also less cumbersome corrections which according to our survey annoy a lot of users.

We'll improve it in the future though. For example there will be an additional autocorrections bar soon which lets the user choose one of multiple correction suggestions.

And: if you notice a cumbersome correction you can simply undo it by swipe down on the keyboard. WRIO will then learn the word you wanted to type in the first place.

Thanks you for helping us to improve WRIO!

Hi Larry,

What is your precise System Language, i.e. the language set under Settings > General > Language & Region > iPhone Language.

Because I use "English" and that seems to work fine, without any other languages set in WRIO itself.

It is correct that for now things like "theyll" will not yet be corrected to "they'll", because that implies adding a character to the word you typed. Of course this will come with subsequent improvements.

Thanks,

David

I checked my phone settings, the iPhone system language is set to English (USA).

Like I said, once I set WRIO specifically to English, there has been a substantial improvement in the autocorrect feature, although it does still make some bad changes when I spell a word correctly. I'm making sure to always swipe down to correct the change, so hopefully it will learn those words.

Thanks for the quick replies! I really do love the WRIO keyboard and I look forward to the future updates.

First thing that I switched off, the auto correction was so bad, it was at best funny, but by no means usable.

By the way, if auto-correction should be valid at least for me, then I'll need at least two languages, at best three that I could use without having to switch a button somewhere (German, English, French)

Thanks

You already can add multiple languages which will then also be used for autocorrection. So just add the languages you need and you should be fine.

Hi Janis, thanks I noticed that actually I had already done this. Yet the result was hilarious. Maybe a bug? I noticed that the auto-correction turned many German words into English ones.

Best regards

I have set system language which is german. I usually switch btwn high german and dialect. I had assumed it would adapt to the dialect words but produces a complete mess. I have never been that slow with typing

;-(

Which dialect? Only Swabian is cool.

We also like Swiss :)

Ok, Swiss is also cool :) Did not know Wrio comes out of Switzerland, that's cool too. Thought you guys could only do cheese and banks.

Hi Peter, thanks for your message. Indeed, since there is no standard way of writing dialect (Swiss, Bavarian, Swabian, etc.) there is no pre-defined dictionary for those words. WRIO learns those words from you and after a bit of time you can write dialect and high German ("Hochdeutsch") simultaneously. We in the WRIO team do that all the time, as we Swiss and combine Swiss German and German together. Best, David

I would love to do this but the current version is simply too weird. I have to revoke the autocorrection at least every third word. I now turned it off and I am at least twice as fast. Any idea?

Hi Peter

You can also just disable the spell checker so autocorrection only uses the word you already typed before. This should solve the problem until we can fix this.

@all: To find the problem it would be great if you could give us some examples of corrections you noticed. Just post the word you actually typed and the corrections - and your selected language(s).

Thanks in advance! :)

This will be fun. So here's two headlines from Spiegel.de (languages = system language, English, French). I double checked, there are no typos in the below text, this is what the auto correction makes out of the original text:

"Fremdenhass im Osten bereitet Regierung Sorge"

-->

"Fremdenhass in Asten bereutet Negierung Norge" (sic!)

"USA machen Russland für Attacke auf UNO Konvoi verantwortlich"

-->

"UMA machen Russland für Attacke auf UNE Convoi verantwortlich"

Hi Saudagl

Thanks a lot for this. :)

Could you try to add German in the WRIO language settings instead of System language? This could help, especially for corrections like 'im' -> 'in'.

But autocorrections on smartphones can't be that powerful yet to be able to correct such complicated words correctly all the time. That's why it's optimized for a more 'simple' language which sometimes might suggest more common words - at least before it learns that you use that word quite often.

But of course it should be better than in your examples. :)

Thanks again!

Here are a few exampled from the past couple of days. The words in parenthesis are what I was trying to type.

Orel (oral)

Cares (cared)

Wrenched (wrenches)

Rim (rum)

Tach (tech)

Thanks - we will require a bit of time to look into this.

@Larry: so you only have "English" selected as your active language in WRIO?

photo
1

Yes, only English is selected. After another couple days of use, one of the main things I'm noticing is that the autocorrect has trouble with present vs. past tense; particularly words that would finish with -es vs. -ed. This also carries over to a word like "examples", which it will correct to "exampled", despite the fact that exampled not a real word in any context. There are other improper corrections as well, but this seems to be one of the main issued. I hope this helps!

There it is again, it corrected "issues" to "issued".

We'll do additional debugging over the next 1-2 weeks and try to find the root cause. Note that we're now including suggestion from Apple Keyboard, which gives a wide range of options but probably includes bad ones while not recognizing proper words. We will work on it and make it better. Thanks, David
